Twelve individuals have been apprehended in connection with a potential right-wing extremist threat targeting an Islamic gathering at a rural estate in Suffolk, according to authorities. The UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall was terminated prematurely on Sunday as a precautionary measure following the perceived threat, as confirmed by Counter Terrorism Police London.

Commander Helen Flanagan, who heads Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that swift action was taken upon learning of a significant threat to the Suffolk Islamic event. Multiple arrests were carried out in various locations nationwide. Gratitude was extended to Suffolk Police for their support, leading to the declaration of a major incident in response to the situation. The commander also thanked event organizers and the affected public.

The news may raise concerns, especially within the Muslim community, but the authorities emphasized their commitment to addressing any potential threat promptly, regardless of the target. Despite the event concluding earlier than planned, it concluded without incident. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the UK’s current threat level being ‘severe,’ urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood commended the police for averting a “credible threat” to the UK Ijtima festival, potentially saving lives. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the news for British Muslims, emphasizing the importance of standing against hatred and promoting unity among diverse communities in the country.

The event, attended by 15,000 individuals, faced a challenging and rapidly evolving situation due to the threat. Suffolk Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Alice Scott described the scenario as complex, prompting a coordinated multi-agency response to ensure the safe departure of attendees. The major incident status was later lifted, emphasizing the successful collaboration among agencies to ensure public safety.

Eight of the arrested individuals have been detained under the Terrorism Act 2000, with specific charges including conspiracy to murder and assisting an offender. The arrests included three men aged 55, 60, and 82 in Surrey, as well as a 48-year-old woman in east London. The authorities expressed gratitude to the event organizers and attendees for their composure in challenging circumstances, assuring the public of a safe resolution to the situation.
