Families residing in underprivileged areas of the UK are at a higher risk of experiencing burglaries compared to those in affluent neighborhoods, as per recent research findings. Data released by the Home Office revealed a decline in residential burglaries, with 154,000 incidents reported in 2025, marking an 11% decrease from the previous year and a 20% drop from 2022. Only 5% of these cases resulted in charges, leaving 7% still under investigation.
Charge rates varied significantly by region, with South Wales having the highest charge rate at 12%, while Hertfordshire had the lowest at 2%. In terms of population-adjusted figures, Middlesbrough had the highest burglary rate, recording 863 residential burglaries in 2025, equivalent to 14 break-ins per 1,000 households despite a 12% decrease in incidents.
Middlesbrough, known for its high levels of deprivation, ranked second in England for average deprivation levels, following Blackpool. Similarly, Bradford reported a burglary rate of 13 break-ins per 1,000 households, placing it 12th among over 300 English council areas in terms of deprivation measures.
Several northern cities, including Kingston upon Hull, Leeds, and Burnley, along with Birmingham and areas like Westminster, Camden, and Southwark in London, recorded around 12 burglaries per 1,000 households. Conversely, rural communities such as North Norfolk, Breckland, and Eden in Cumbria showed the lowest burglary rates with just two incidents per 1,000 households.
The definition of residential burglary includes unauthorized entry into inhabited buildings with the intent to steal, encompassing not only homes but also sheds and garages. Police data cover aggravated burglary involving weapons, distraction burglaries, and attempted break-ins. Urban areas continue to experience a higher concentration of burglaries, reflecting the benefits of geographic isolation and community watch initiatives in rural settings.
While there has been an overall decrease in burglaries, law enforcement emphasizes the importance of prioritizing home security regardless of the residential location.
