Thieves have stolen a young tree that sprouted from the renowned Sycamore Gap tree, which was unlawfully chopped down in 2023. The stolen sapling, derived from acorns of the iconic tree, was nurtured at a National Trust site in the Lake District. Heartbroken staff revealed the theft on Thursday.

Authorities are probing the incident, which took place at the National Trust-managed Wray Parkland and Castle. Staff members are appealing for anyone with knowledge about the theft to step forward and assist in the investigation.

The team at the National Trust property, situated on the western edge of Lake Windermere, expressed shock and sadness over the stolen sapling. They are collaborating with Cumbria Police in response to the incident.

Laura Lee, the general manager of the National Trust in the region, conveyed dismay over the theft of the sapling. The tree was originally grown from seeds collected from the beloved tree at Hadrian’s Wall, illicitly felled in 2023. The stolen sapling was part of a wider initiative called ‘Branches of Care,’ jointly developed by the National Trust and St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston to support individuals facing illness, dementia, and loss through nature.

Numerous Sycamore Gap seedlings have been planted across the UK’s National Parks to establish a living connection between the country’s protected landscapes. The planting aimed to create a lasting legacy uniting these cherished environments.

In a related incident from July 2025, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were sentenced to over four years in prison for the reckless act of cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree. While some welcomed the sentence, families affected by violent crimes considered it inadequate.

Ms. Lee expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the sapling, emphasizing its significance as a symbol of resilience and rejuvenation. Despite the setback, she highlighted the enduring spirit that the tree embodied, emphasizing the importance of care, restoration, and community support.

The public is urged to come forward with any information regarding the theft by contacting the police and providing the crime reference number CRI10053058. Reports can be made online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it or by calling 101. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be reached anonymously online or by calling 0800 555 111.
