A 21-year-old driver, Rosie Hanson, received a suspended 16-month prison sentence for causing the death of pedestrian Ryan Phillips through careless driving. The incident occurred on January 17, 2024, as Phillips and his girlfriend were walking along Marine Parade in Sheerness, Kent. Hanson’s speeding VW Golf struck them, resulting in fatal injuries to Phillips.

Hanson, who was working for a pizza company on an ad hoc basis, was found to be driving at speeds exceeding the limit before the accident. She claimed to have swerved to avoid an animal, leading to the tragic collision. Expert analysis suggested she was driving at around 60mph at the time of the incident.

The court acknowledged the devastating impact of Phillips’ death on his loved ones, with his girlfriend describing him as a caring and enthusiastic individual. Phillips’ mother expressed profound grief over the loss of her son, emphasizing his selfless and loving nature.

Despite the tragedy, Hanson expressed remorse in a letter to the court and the victim’s family. She admitted her wrongdoing and apologized for the irreversible consequences of her actions. In addition to the suspended sentence, Hanson was ordered to complete unpaid work, disqualified from driving for three years, and required to pass an extended driving test.

The judge highlighted the seriousness of the offense and the need for accountability while recognizing Hanson’s young age at the time of the incident. The court proceedings shed light on the profound loss experienced by Phillips’ family and friends, underscoring the lasting impact of the tragic event.
