A mother shared her experience of noticing her young child’s unusual walking pattern, only to later discover he was battling a rare and aggressive type of cancer.
Maxton Bowman, a two-year-old who had recently started walking, began displaying difficulty in walking, which eventually progressed to the point where he could no longer use his legs.
After observing a concerning blood rash on Maxton in September 2025, his parents rushed him to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for blood tests, which revealed that Maxton had lymphoblastic leukemia, a fast-growing type of blood cancer.
Maxton has been undergoing extensive medical care and is awaiting his next round of chemotherapy as his immune system’s neutrophil levels are currently insufficient for further treatment. His mother, Coralle, expressed her determination to protect her son and maintain a positive outlook amidst the challenges they face.
Despite being non-verbal and autistic, Maxton, who had a turbulent start after being born not breathing, is described by his mother as a joyful child living in his own world. His milestone of learning to walk was followed by a sudden deterioration in his health, leading to the loss of mobility in his legs.
Multiple hospital visits initially yielded normal blood results until a significant drop in Maxton’s blood platelet count prompted further investigation, resulting in a swift leukemia diagnosis and immediate treatment initiation.
Despite enduring severe side effects from treatment, including temporary loss of leg function and complications from medications, Maxton’s resilient spirit remains unwavering. His recent achievement of crawling again after months without walking brought immense joy to his family.
Due to his medical condition and autism, Maxton requires constant supervision to prevent harm, prompting his parents to seek a specialized bed for his safety during sleep. To support their efforts, the family has launched a GoFundMe page and organized a community bike ride fundraiser to provide for Maxton’s needs.
Coralle emphasized the importance of highlighting Maxton’s strength and resilience, aiming to inspire others with his courage and determination. The family plans to celebrate his progress with a community event, showcasing the positive impact of their son’s unwavering spirit.
