Tourists planning a trip to Spain have been cautioned in light of approximately 212 reported deaths across the country in recent days.
According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, the fatalities have been linked to high temperatures as Spain faces its initial heatwave of the year, which commenced last Sunday and is now gradually subsiding. The central and northern regions are experiencing the most severe effects of the extreme weather conditions. On Wednesday, June 24, there was a peak in excess mortality, with almost half of the deaths (96) occurring on that day.
Diana Gómez, a scientist at the National Centre for Epidemiology (CNE), mentioned that these numbers are preliminary and will likely stabilize in a week.
British tourists in Spain are being advised to reduce their alcohol intake during periods of intense heat. The Ministry of Health in Spain emphasized the importance of avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and sugary beverages as they can exacerbate dehydration in hot weather.
Alcohol is known to increase urine production, leading to dehydration. In hot conditions, the body already loses fluids through sweat, so consuming alcohol can heighten the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Both tourists and locals are being encouraged to drink water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty; wear light, breathable clothing; stay in cool, shaded areas, and refrain from strenuous activities during the peak heat hours. The UK’s Foreign Office advises people to stay updated on severe weather warnings by following the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) and European Meteorological Services.
