Britain is expected to surpass a 50-year heat record with scientists cautioning that heatwaves will become more severe. Schools nationwide are closing early in anticipation of breaking the June temperature record of 35.6C set in 1976. London and the South East are forecasted to reach 36C on Wednesday, potentially climbing to 39C in certain areas by Thursday’s end.

Amid the scorching temperatures, transport authorities are advising against non-essential travel. Many schools in England and Wales are either closing or ending classes early this week to protect students from the intense heat. Buckingham School in Buckinghamshire, for instance, will be shut on Wednesday and Thursday, with students urged to engage in online learning due to inadequate cooling and limited shade on campus.

This heatwave coincides with the 50th anniversary of a historic heatwave that led to water shortages, failed harvests, and increased food prices. Professor Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, emphasized the increasing frequency and intensity of UK heatwaves. A red weather warning for extreme heat spanning from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham has been issued.

Network Rail’s deputy chief executive, Jake Kelly, stressed the impact of extreme heat on railways, prompting precautionary travel measures. Chiltern Railways has already slashed more than half of its regular services. A ‘heat-health’ Red Alert has been issued for several UK regions, with health authorities cautioning that the soaring temperatures pose health risks for all individuals.

Experts urge rapid reductions in fossil fuel emissions and adaptations to infrastructure to combat future heatwaves. Professor Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading highlighted the stark contrast between the 1976 heatwave and the current warmer climate. Future projections indicate even hotter temperatures, reinforcing the urgency for climate action to mitigate the impacts of extreme heatwaves.
