Andy Burnham may encounter obstacles in his bid for the Prime Minister position as Labour MPs consider supporting other potential contenders. Some legislators have encouraged Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the PM, to enter the race due to concerns about Burnham assuming the role without a challenge. However, the likelihood of Jones running seems to be diminishing as a source close to him downplayed the idea.
Al Carns, a former defense minister, has also hinted at contemplating a run for the top position. When asked about launching a leadership bid, Carns mentioned that his decision would be influenced by various factors, including aligning with a specific vision and policy direction.
There are doubts about whether either Jones or Carns could rally the support of 81 MPs required to participate in a leadership contest. Burnham reportedly enjoys the backing of a majority of Labour MPs and would emerge as a strong frontrunner if a competition were triggered.
Should Burnham face no challengers, he could potentially assume the role of Prime Minister within a few weeks. Nomination submissions to replace Keir Starmer are set to commence on July 9 and close on July 16, paving the way for Burnham to potentially take office the following day in the absence of a competing candidate.
Several Cabinet Ministers have opposed the idea of a contentious leadership battle. Nick Thomas-Symonds, a staunch supporter of Starmer, has thrown his support behind Burnham, advocating for a swift transfer of power.
Emma Reynolds, the Environment Secretary, expressed her reluctance for a leadership contest, emphasizing the need for unity within the party. She endorsed Burnham, highlighting his strong backing among MPs.
However, backbencher Nadia Whittome stressed the importance of scrutinizing Burnham’s ideas to address critical national issues. She underscored the need for transparent candidate evaluations to tackle pressing challenges faced by the country.
John Slinger, the Labour MP for Rugby, emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive leadership selection process to ensure that aspiring leaders undergo thorough scrutiny before assuming high office.
An MP from a Red Wall constituency noted reservations about Darren Jones’s viability as a candidate and highlighted the importance for Burnham to maintain his position. The MP speculated about the potential emergence of a challenger from the Starmer camp in the future.
