Fears are rising that potential disruptions from Israel could jeopardize the peace agreement between US President Donald Trump and Iran. Israel has pledged to maintain its presence in Lebanon indefinitely, a move that could impact the agreement set to be finalized this week. Reports emerged of Israeli military actions against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon on Monday, challenging the expected terms of the upcoming deal.
Shortly after Trump’s announcement of a new peace agreement with a 60-day consultation period, Israeli forces were reported to have targeted areas in southern Lebanon. Despite Tehran’s insistence on including Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah, in any long-term resolution, Israeli leaders have made it clear that troops will remain in southern Lebanon. This ongoing conflict could undermine the efforts to establish peace along Israel’s northern borders.
Iran has cautioned that it holds the US accountable for any Israeli attacks on Lebanon, citing alleged coordination between Israel and the US. Tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump have escalated, with Netanyahu facing pressure to confront Hezbollah, potentially hindering progress on the Iran deal that seeks to extend to Hezbollah.
The Memorandum of Understanding, scheduled to initiate a 60-day consultation period, aims to address key issues such as the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program. The agreement is reported to involve significant financial reparations, unfreezing assets, and easing sanctions in exchange for halting hostilities. However, Tehran’s insistence on Lebanon’s inclusion, specifically Hezbollah, remains a critical sticking point for reaching a comprehensive agreement.
Iran’s Foreign Minister emphasized Lebanon’s integral role in the agreement, stressing the need to respect its sovereignty. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, affirmed that Israeli troops will continue their presence in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza to counter security threats. Israeli officials have warned of strong retaliation in case of attacks from Iran due to events in Lebanon.
While some Israeli politicians criticize Netanyahu for allowing Israel to be excluded from the agreement, Trump expressed disappointment over Israel’s recent military actions against Hezbollah. The situation remains tense as negotiations proceed, with the involvement of Lebanon and Hezbollah proving to be a contentious issue in the path towards peace.
