A council member who switched from the Conservative party to Reform UK has now resigned from Reform UK, criticizing them as “unsuitable for governance” due to internal conflicts. Robbie Lammas, formerly the deputy leader of Reform UK on Medway Council in Kent, stepped down after just eight months in his new role. Lammas admitted regretting his decision to leave the Tories for Nigel Farage’s party, labeling it as “the biggest mistake of his life” and feeling deceived.
Describing Reform as lacking seriousness and readiness for governance, Lammas highlighted the toxic infighting within the party, surpassing what he witnessed during his time with the Conservatives. He has decided to serve as an independent council member but expressed his intention to eventually rejoin the Conservative party.
In a statement, Lammas acknowledged his error in leaving the Conservatives, apologizing for his actions. He emphasized the unity in values within the Conservative party, contrasting it with Reform, which he believes is united solely by grievances. Lammas stressed the importance of addressing issues for the public good rather than focusing on internal conflicts.
Initially elected to Medway Council in 2021, Lammas switched to Reform UK before deciding to return to being an independent council member. He has since apologized to Tory Leader Kemi Badenoch, recognizing the impact of his defection on his former colleagues. Lammas expressed disappointment in Reform UK, stating that the party does not align with conservative values as he initially believed.
Responding to Lammas’ departure, a spokesperson for Reform UK mentioned Lammas’s previous suspension and rejection of a job application within the party. The spokesperson highlighted the party’s recent successes in local government elections across the UK, with control over 30 councils, expressing optimism for future elections in Medway.
