Tornado sirens blared through the night skies of Kansas City on Saturday, disrupting Scotland’s return to the World Cup after 28 years. The alarming wails served as a chilling alert to both locals and football fans, signaling the imminent arrival of severe weather conditions. As a result, the FIFA Fan Festival in Kansas City was shut down early, and the broadcast of the Scotland game was halted due to the forecasted winds of up to 80 mph from the National Weather Service.

The entire metropolitan area remained under a tornado watch until 11 pm, causing massive power outages and bringing the Scotland match to an abrupt halt. The aftermath of the storm left over 68,000 homes without electricity, prompting first responders to swiftly address safety concerns such as downed power lines and fallen trees across the city.

Despite missing the Scotland-Haiti game due to power failures, football enthusiasts were not alone in their disrupted plans. England’s team faced their own challenges as they arrived in Kansas City just before the weather took a turn for the worse. The team, led by Thomas Tuchel, had to cut short a community training session at Swope Soccer Village as tornado sirens sounded. Fans were dispersed, and the players sought shelter indoors following safety guidelines to protect themselves from potential flying debris.

This weather disruption adds to the series of setbacks England has encountered at the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a recent theft of training equipment that was later recovered. Tuchel’s squad is set to kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Texas before facing Ghana and Panama in the Group L matches.
