Keir Starmer faces a dual setback as both Secretary of Defence John Healey and Armed Forces minister Al Carns tender their resignations. Healey’s departure has triggered a crisis within the Ministry of Defence, leading to additional resignations from ministerial aides Pamela Nash and Rachel Hopkins.

The resignations stem from a funding dispute, with Healey accusing the Prime Minister of failing to challenge the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate necessary funds for national defense. The ongoing conflict revolves around financing the delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP).

In his resignation letter, Healey criticized the inadequacy of the defense plan, stating it falls short of meeting the country’s defense requirements in the current precarious climate. Carns, a former Royal Marine, also cited insufficient defense funding in his resignation, highlighting government inaction and extensive delays in implementing the DIP.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Carns emphasized the obligation to provide soldiers with essential equipment and unwavering support, pointing out the country’s failure to fulfill these responsibilities. As a response to Healey’s resignation, Dan Jarvis, an Army veteran with experience in various conflict zones, including Kosovo, Northern Ireland, and Afghanistan, has been appointed as the new Defence Secretary.
