A man from the UK has passed away in Fuerteventura after being saved from the ocean by a helicopter.

Rescue services responded to Playa de La Escalera, near El Cotillo in the northern part of the Canary island, at approximately 5:30 pm on Thursday following reports of two individuals struggling in the water off the well-known beach in the municipality of La Oliva.

The man was spotted by rescuers from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter, as reported by the Canarian Weekly. Upon his rescue, emergency crews discovered that he was in cardiac arrest and promptly initiated CPR while transporting him to a nearby landing site.

The second swimmer was able to exit the sea without aid and received medical attention on the beach from paramedics, according to the report.
