Sabastian Sawe made history by setting a new marathon world record of 1:59:30 at the London Marathon, surpassing the previous record of 2:00:35 held by Kelvin Kiptum. This victory marked Sawe’s second consecutive win in the event, improving upon his previous year’s time of 2:02:27. The intense competition in the elite men’s race came down to a close battle between Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia.
During the final stretch of the race, Sawe managed to pull ahead of Kejelcha, securing his place in the annals of marathon history. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, claiming the second spot in a tightly contested race. Reflecting on the race, Cram drew parallels to iconic sporting moments like Roger Bannister’s four-minute mile, emphasizing the significance of witnessing such record-breaking feats firsthand. Paula Radcliffe praised Sawe’s accomplishment, predicting that it would have a global impact.
Ahead of the race, Sawe confidently affirmed his potential to break the record when asked about it, showing belief in his abilities and his equipment. Meanwhile, in the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa clinched victory for the second year in a row, setting a new women’s London Marathon record with a time of 2:15:41. Kenyan athletes Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei secured the second and third positions, respectively.
