A recent report by consumer group Which? has revealed that major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, indicates that lesser-known networks are excelling in value and customer service.

The study aimed to assess which mobile providers are meeting customer expectations. The results showed that the prominent “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many of the smaller rivals in the industry.

Among the top performers in the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. While EE fared relatively better among the major providers, O2 and Three were among the lowest-ranked networks.

Price emerged as a key factor highlighted in the report. Customers on the Big Four networks were found to pay an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks paid just £9 on average.

Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, signal coverage and service quality often remain on par with major networks as many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of larger networks.

Switching between networks was reported to be a straightforward process, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes. One member mentioned switching from O2 to SMARTY, saving around £200 annually on their mobile plan.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger firms in customer service and affordability. She encouraged customers to consider switching to providers offering better value, especially those nearing the end of their contracts.

The rankings from Which? placed Talkmobile at the top with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, SMARTY, and Voxi among others. The scores ranged from 74% for EE to 65% for Three, with O2 and Three ranking the lowest among the major networks.
