Christian Horner’s recent appearance at a MotoGP race has fueled speculation about his potential venture into a new sport. The former Red Bull team principal was sighted at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, hinting at a possible shift towards the premier class of two-wheeled motorsport.
Having been let go by Red Bull last year, the 52-year-old has been exploring avenues to re-enter the F1 scene. Despite rumored connections with Aston Martin and Alpine, Horner is still on the sidelines.
Toto Wolff, a former rival from Mercedes, hinted that a return to F1 could be challenging for Horner due to past conflicts within the sport. MotoGP, now under the umbrella of F1’s parent company Liberty Media, could present a fresh opportunity for Horner.
During the weekend, Horner spent time in the factory Honda garage, engaging with Honda Racing Corporation CEO Koji Watanabe and interacting with key figures from Ducati, the reigning world champions.
Expressing his admiration for MotoGP, Horner mentioned his long-standing affinity with Honda, which powered Red Bull’s engines during Max Verstappen’s successful F1 campaigns. When asked about the possibility of team ownership, Horner expressed interest in exploring new horizons in motorsport.
Meanwhile, Wolff’s potential move to acquire a stake in Alpine could complicate Horner’s path back to F1. Wolff clarified that their interest in the stake wasn’t related to any rivalry with Horner, emphasizing the need to evaluate the investment objectively.
If Horner decides to delve into MotoGP, he would follow in the footsteps of Guenther Steiner, the former Haas boss who led a consortium to acquire the Red Bull KTM Tech3 team last year.
Horner witnessed an exciting sprint race at the MotoGP event, won by Marc Marquez, the reigning world champion. The main Grand Prix was set to take place on Sunday afternoon.
