A police officer who arrived at the scene of the Salisbury nerve agent attack was holding her infant niece when she was informed of the potential contamination risk. PC Alexandra Way and a colleague were the initial responders to ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, initially mistaking their condition for a drug overdose. It was later discovered that the pair had been exposed to the lethal nerve agent novichok, posing a danger to others.

PC Way recounted encountering the victims in the town center, observing Mr. Skripal’s alarming symptoms and only learning his identity later. The revelation of the poisoning triggered a response demanding her return to the scene with all potentially contaminated items, causing distress as she was holding her sister’s two-month-old baby at the time.

Sergei Skripal, a former spy, had a history of espionage activities and had been imprisoned in Russia before being released and settling in Salisbury. Following their exposure to novichok in 2018, both Skripal and his daughter were hospitalized but survived the attack. Medical professionals, including Dr. Steve Cockcroft, initially misdiagnosed the case as a drug overdose until further investigation raised suspicions of foul play.

Despite efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, including warrants for the arrest of three Russian agents allegedly involved in the attack, Russia has refused to cooperate. Tragically, Dawn Sturgess lost her life to novichok exposure after coming into contact with a perfume bottle left by the assailants. The mishandling of the incident, including insensitive remarks following Sturgess’s death, has been condemned by law enforcement officials.
