Long-distance vacations offer the chance for exciting escapades, but they often mean enduring long hours in a cramped airplane seat, struggling to adapt to the new time zone upon arrival.
For those willing to splurge, upgrading to business or first-class provides access to luxurious lie-flat beds. However, this option comes at a significantly higher cost compared to economy tickets, putting it out of reach for many travelers.
In a bid to offer a more affordable alternative, an airline has introduced a new option available for economy and premium economy passengers as an extra service. Air New Zealand is launching Economy Skynest™ on its ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland, starting from May 18, with full service commencing in November. Marketed as “the world’s first sleep pods in the sky,” Skynest features six individual lie-flat nests that can be booked for four-hour intervals during the flight.
Given the lengthy duration of these flights, which can last up to 18 hours, the opportunity to relax in these pods could provide much-needed relief from the confines of an economy class seat. The pods are located in a separate cabin area with a privacy curtain, and each pod is approximately six foot six inches tall, accommodating tall passengers comfortably.
Passengers reserving a pod will receive a complimentary amenity kit containing essentials like an eye mask and earplugs. Bed linens are changed between passengers to maintain cleanliness, and each pod is equipped with a seatbelt, USB charging outlet, and a small light for reading or using electronic devices.
The cost of a session in Skynest starts from $495 New Zealand Dollars, approximately £215, making it a premium upgrade that remains more budget-friendly than flying in a premium cabin.
Skynest is not the first enhancement Air New Zealand has offered to its economy passengers. In 2011, the airline introduced Skycouch, allowing economy class travelers to reserve a row that transforms into a lie-flat bed, providing extra comfort during long journeys. These seats include a pull-out footrest, creating a wider sleeping space than a standard airplane seat.
The Skycouch option is available on specific routes for passengers flying on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 777-300ER or 787-9 aircraft. The cost varies depending on the route and availability, ranging from NZ$525 to $1,500 per row (equivalent to about £228 to £652). United Airlines plans to launch a similar product called Relax Rows in 2027, while Lufthansa already offers a Sleeper Row option on flights lasting over 11 hours.
