The renowned artist Banksy’s earliest known artwork, adorning a building in Bristol, could soon be available for art enthusiasts as the property’s owner, Wellspring Settlement, is preparing to sell the site. This building, once home to the ‘Dug Out’ youth club where Banksy frequented during his youth, is a significant community center facing financial difficulties.

Wellspring Settlement, an essential hub in the Barton Hill neighborhood, offers various services such as baby and toddler play sessions, a food club, financial advice, social gatherings for adults, youth programs, and space for local charities and groups. Notably, it played a role in nurturing Banksy before he rose to fame as an anonymous artist.

The potential sale of the building will not only mark the end of its role in supporting Bristol’s youth but also provide a piece of art history to the buyer. Currently, the property houses a local amateur boxing club, which will need to relocate once the ownership changes hands.

In a heartfelt message to the Barton Hill community, Wellspring Settlement explained their financial challenges, stating that the costs of maintaining the building exceed the rent generated by the boxing club. Despite efforts to find alternative solutions with the club, they have decided to market the building for sale to secure their financial future.

The charity reassured the community of its commitment to supporting the boxing club during the transition, aiming to find suitable alternative premises for its activities. While acknowledging the community’s attachment to the building, Wellspring emphasized transparency and optimism in ensuring a positive future for both the charity and the boxing club.
