A young professional who loves traveling doesn’t mind journeying 3,000 miles to work, even if it’s a job that may not appeal to many. Georgia Samuels happily makes the lengthy trip across the South Atlantic ocean every two weeks, leaving behind Perth, Australia, to start a new chapter in Bali as a health and safety adviser at a remote mine. Despite the unconventional nature of her job, Georgia cherishes her unique lifestyle and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

Before relocating in November, the 31-year-old divested her car and wardrobe, embracing the demanding two-week on, two-week off schedule at the Western Australia Mine. While her work environment involves a dark underground mine, Georgia finds Bali to be a fantastic change and has no regrets six months into her move.

Georgia shared that there are unexpected advantages to her extensive commute, citing the laid-back atmosphere and welcoming people from around the globe as highlights that make the journey worthwhile. She emphasized that she now saves hundreds of dollars monthly compared to her previous expenses.

Reflecting on her decision, Georgia expressed, “I was on a two-week on, two-week off roster and struggled to socialize in Perth, so I felt I could relocate anywhere. Bali’s fitness culture intrigued me, and I realized I could explore the island during my time off. I sold my car and clothes and took the plunge. The quality of food in Bali is exceptional; you can enjoy fine dining experiences like a romantic steak and oysters dinner for two at less than £80 ($150).”

Georgia is not alone in her long-distance commute lifestyle. Another individual, Ethan Spibey, left his job and property in London to move to Barcelona with his husband, Soren Scharf. Despite the relocation, Ethan continues to travel back to London for work, asserting that he is financially better off. Operating remotely from Barcelona, Ethan returns to the UK for in-person meetings several times a month while running his communication training business, serving clients like the Post Office and Siemens.

Ethan explained, “I studied in Barcelona and visited annually. I assessed the practicality of traveling back to London regularly and found it viable. With approximately 25 daily flights to London, Barcelona proved to be a cost-effective and less strenuous option than commuting from some nearby areas.”

Both Georgia and Ethan exemplify how unconventional work arrangements can lead to fulfilling lifestyles, demonstrating that with strategic planning and flexibility, professionals can navigate long-distance commutes successfully while enjoying the benefits of diverse living experiences.
