Donald Trump’s arrival in Beijing was marked by his portrayal as the world’s paramount negotiator. Shortly after, Vladimir Putin’s arrival conveyed a sense of returning to a trusted strategic partner.

The contrast between the outcomes of the two visits left the US president in an uncomfortable position. The manner of their handshakes spoke volumes. Putin’s interaction with Xi Jinping exuded confidence, with firm grips and relaxed smiles, showcasing a carefully orchestrated display of unity between two leaders shaping a new global order. In stark contrast, Trump’s handshake appeared eager and almost fan-like, lacking the same level of assurance and authority.

Trump’s attempts to assert dominance on the Beijing stage seemed almost comical. Despite his self-promotion as a master negotiator, standing next to Xi, he appeared more like someone trying too hard to impress, akin to an overzealous estate agent with a high-profile client.

While Western politics often face turbulence, Xi embodies stability and permanence, projecting patience amid the chaos. World leaders, including those from the West, now seek Beijing’s assurance and alignment, a significant shift from the traditional focus on Washington.

Xi presided over both encounters like a seasoned headmaster receiving two distinct pupils—a poised and prepared one, and another who appeared to be bluffing his way through the assignment.

Putin’s visit, while partly theatrical, signaled strength and momentum in politics, underscoring China’s strategic reliance on Russia. In contrast, Trump’s visit highlighted the waning influence of the US despite its military and economic prowess.

Even Trump, known for his dominance and deal-making persona, appeared diminished beside Xi, resembling a casino player bluffing at a poker table while the true power quietly calculates the stakes.

The essence of these visits lies in the profound shift in global dynamics, where Xi Jinping emerges not just as a participant but as the central figure in the geopolitical order.
