Carrie Johnson has raised concerns about the possibility that John Worboys, a convicted black-cab driver rapist, may have had “up to 1,000, if not more” victims of his heinous sexual offenses.
Johnson, the spouse of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, recounted an encounter with Worboys in 2007 when she hailed his taxi late at night. She disclosed that Worboys had reportedly offered her drinks laced with drugs, claiming to have won money.
Reflecting on her experience with the criminal cabbie during her student days, Johnson criticized the police for their handling of the case and revealed that numerous women have contacted her, alleging to be victims of Worboys.
Worboys was initially imprisoned in 2009 for 19 sexual crimes involving attacks on 12 victims in London between October 2006 and February 2008. Johnson, speaking on Good Morning Britain, suggested that the actual number of victims could be significantly higher.
She expressed that Worboys operated as a cab driver from 2000 until his conviction in 2009, potentially encountering up to 1,000 victims during that period. Johnson mentioned receiving messages from women on Instagram following the release of the miniseries “Believe Me” about Worboys’ victims.
Describing her own narrow escape from being assaulted by Worboys, Johnson recounted the incident where the cabbie drugged her with spiked champagne but fortunately managed to exit the taxi before losing consciousness.
Johnson criticized the Metropolitan Police’s response to the case, emphasizing the need for dedicated support for Worboys’ victims within the police force. She highlighted the disparity in handling rape cases compared to other crimes and the challenges victims face in being believed and supported by law enforcement.
In a subsequent development, more victims came forward following increased publicity around the case, leading to additional charges against Worboys. In 2019, he received two life sentences with a minimum term of six years for his crimes.
Despite being denied parole for the second time recently due to the continued threat he poses to women, Worboys will be eligible for reconsideration in approximately two years.
