Concerns are rising among countries that have secured a spot in the upcoming World Cup due to the high expenses associated with the event, leading to fears of financial losses. Several nations have voiced serious apprehensions about the tournament potentially turning into a financial debacle. Some countries plan to address this issue at the upcoming FIFA congress scheduled in the Canadian city of Vancouver later this week. The reduction in daily allowances provided by FIFA to delegates has sparked outrage, with the allowance dropping from £630 per person during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to £430 for this year’s event.

Countries are hopeful for a reconsideration of the cost structure or for FIFA to allocate a larger share of the profits to them. Their primary grievance revolves around the substantial expenses related to reserving hotels and training facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. A source within FIFA, requesting anonymity, informed the Mirror: “There is a genuine worry that several nations might end up in a financial deficit. This event is the most profitable in the world.

‘Smaller nations should be able to generate significant revenue. It is unacceptable that they are facing potential financial losses in what is anticipated to be the largest sports event they have ever participated in. “Efforts are underway to bring up this matter in Vancouver, with hopes of finding a reasonable solution.” Four countries are set to make their debut in the World Cup: Cape Verde, Curacao, Uzbekistan, and Jordan. The 76th FIFA Congress is scheduled for Thursday.

The congress will gather representatives from all 211 member associations in Canada, which is hosting the FIFA Congress for the second time after the event was last held in Montreal in 1976. The issue of allowances will be a focal point of discussion during the event.

The source further stated: “The concerns about financial matters are not limited to smaller nations; even some larger countries are discontent. This is a significant issue.”

The World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is set to commence on June 10th, culminating with the final match in New York City on Sunday, July 19th.
