A woman was attacked with a knife inside Holy Cross Church in Summerhill, Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland, just before morning Mass today around 9:45 am. The victim, identified as Mary McNamara in her 50s, sustained a single knife wound and was swiftly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement, including specialized armed police from the Armed Support Unit, and medical personnel promptly responded to the incident. The victim, despite sustaining serious injuries, is reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening wounds, according to Gardai authorities.
Ann O’Connor, a local parishioner, recounted being present with the victim when the attack took place. She mentioned that the assailant pursued the victim with a knife, describing the victim as a “lovely person” and “very gentle.”
Authorities later apprehended a man in his 30s at a nearby residence in connection with the incident. The suspect is currently in custody at a Garda Station in Co Waterford, where he can be held for up to 24 hours. Additionally, Gardai confirmed the confiscation of a knife as part of their ongoing investigation.
In an official statement, the police indicated that while the woman sustained severe injuries during the assault, her life is not believed to be at risk at this point.
