A police officer who was off duty at the time faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, nearly 10 months after a fatal collision involving a 16-year-old e-bike rider.
The incident took place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 10:10 am on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, where two cars and an e-bike were involved in a crash. Tragically, the young e-bike rider, Ryley Hutson, lost his life at the scene. Emergency services responded to the scene, and witnesses reported an air ambulance landing nearby.
The accused, 31-year-old Daniel Cartwright, a serving police officer with Bedfordshire Police, has been charged with the crime of causing death by dangerous driving. He resides in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and is scheduled to appear before Nottingham magistrates on August 6, 2026.
Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe fundraiser was set up online by Ryley’s aunt, who described him as a vibrant and loving individual. She expressed the devastating impact of his loss on their family, remembering him as a cheerful and unforgettable soul.
Initially, a 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on police bail pending further investigations.
Detective Inspector Jamie Moore from Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit acknowledged the profound grief experienced by Ryley’s family and updated them on the progress of the investigation.
An inquest was initiated by Coroner Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner’s Court on December 2 to delve into the circumstances surrounding Ryley’s tragic death. The preliminary findings from a post-mortem examination indicated chest injuries as the likely cause of death.
