Kim Oakhill, a 51-year-old woman, faced a sudden life-altering situation when symptoms like night sweats and hot flushes led to a grim diagnosis. She is now raising funds to access a specialized drug not available through the NHS.
Before being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2024 at the age of 48, Kim was in good health. However, she started experiencing persistent leg pain, fatigue, night sweats, and hot flushes. Initially attributed to perimenopause, she was prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which proved ineffective.
Despite increasing her HRT dosage, Kim’s symptoms worsened. By February 2025, she developed a persistent cough initially thought to be an unrelated infection. Subsequent diagnoses included acid reflux, asthma, and a chest infection, but no treatment provided relief. Additional symptoms, such as voice changes, emerged.
Following a CT scan intended to rule out serious issues, Kim was shocked to learn she had a cancerous mass in her right lung classified as stage four. The cancer had spread to her heart and brain linings, rendering it advanced and inoperable.
Misinterpreted as perimenopause symptoms, Kim’s early signs of cancer went undetected. She underwent intensive chemotherapy rounds to prolong her life but suffered severe side effects. Uncertain of when the cancer might resurface, Kim faces limitations on NHS treatment options.
With a projected life expectancy of less than 12 months, Kim seeks £150,000 for private targeted therapy. She remains optimistic for her family’s sake and strives to dispel the misconception that only smokers develop lung cancer.
