A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her 19-day-old baby, whom she tried to falsely accuse another child of harming. Nicole Blain, aged 30, was convicted of killing Thea Jane Wilson after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The court determined that she must serve a minimum of 19 years before being considered for parole.

The tragic incident occurred when Baby Thea sustained severe injuries, including three skull fractures, brain damage, and retinal hemorrhaging, from a violent incident at Blain’s residence in Greenock, Inverclyde, on July 14, 2023. Medical experts concluded that the injuries were indicative of the baby being violently shaken or repeatedly struck against a hard surface.

In an attempt to cover up her crime, Blain falsely claimed that she found her daughter injured on the floor after waking up from a nap and suggested that another child present in the house was responsible for the harm. However, prosecutors dismissed these claims as baseless, and a pathologist ruled out the possibility of the baby’s injuries being accidental.

Following the jury’s guilty verdict, the judge informed Blain that she would receive a life sentence and would remain in custody until the determination of the minimum term she must serve. Despite being on bail, Blain was taken into custody, prompting an emotional reaction from her as she was led away. Thea, described as “perfect” at birth on June 25, 2023, tragically lost her life due to the violent actions of her mother.

In a statement after the conviction, Police Scotland highlighted the tragic nature of the case and emphasized that Blain would face the consequences of her actions. Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young expressed gratitude to all involved in the investigation for their diligent work in seeking justice for Baby Thea.
