A mother opted for a unique birthday celebration for her son by taking him on a budget-friendly trip to Paris instead of a traditional party in the UK. Monica Stott, 37, a mother of three from Wrexham, typically travels without her children but decided to bring her 11-year-old son on this particular adventure.

Their action-packed 24-hour trip to Paris cost them a total of £300, serving as a cost-effective yet memorable alternative to an expensive birthday party. Monica explained, “I believe young children may not remember everything, so spending a significant amount on a party that no one will recall seemed unnecessary.”

Comparing the costs, Monica mentioned that a typical party for a class, involving activities like cinema, bowling, or soft play, usually amounts to around £250 or more. However, for her, the trip was not just about saving money but about cherishing quality one-on-one time with her son.

During their short visit, they managed to explore many iconic landmarks of the city, indulge in the celebrations, and return to their beds before midnight. Surprisingly, Monica’s other children didn’t mind their absence at all.

Reflecting on the experience, Monica shared, “The children seemed more excited for their upcoming birthday trips and barely noticed our absence. This idea originated when my middle son expressed a desire to visit Barcelona for a day, and it escalated to my eldest choosing Paris.”

To avoid early morning rush, they commenced their journey the evening prior, staying at a budget-friendly hotel for £100. The next day began with a complimentary breakfast at the hotel, followed by visits to various attractions like Sacre-Coeur, Place du Tertre for pastries and hot chocolates, the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, the Eiffel Tower, and a cruise on the River Seine.

Throughout the day, they relished baked goods and hot chocolates, concluding with a meal at the airport before their 10 pm flight back home. By 11 pm, they were back in their own beds.

Monica emphasized that their goal was not to see everything Paris had to offer in just 24 hours but to enjoy a mix of iconic sights, leisurely walks, and a touch of spontaneity. She highlighted the excitement of waking up in Paris, spending the day exploring, and returning home to sleep in their own beds on the same night.

Sharing her tips for making the most of such extreme day trips, Monica suggested arriving the night before, packing light, pre-booking tickets, and utilizing public transportation. She also mentioned her previous budget trips to Reykjavik, Amsterdam, and Alicante for less than £100.

In conclusion, Monica emphasized that travel doesn’t have to be a luxury reserved for the wealthy. With proper planning, a quick day trip abroad can be an affordable indulgence accessible to everyone.
