Ukraine has announced the end of what was referred to as the “spirit of Anchorage” following Russia’s acknowledgment of facing fuel shortages.
The phrase was coined by Russia to signify a new era of collaboration with the US post a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska last year.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Moscow’s assertions of reaching covert agreements with the US during the August 2025 summit, stating that such expectations have been shattered.
Sybiha dismissed Russia’s claims of informal deals between Trump and Putin, emphasizing that no agreements were reached during the Anchorage discussions, as highlighted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He insisted that any peace initiative excluding Ukraine would not succeed.
According to Sybiha, Russia should abandon its reliance on illusions and engage in substantial peace negotiations, cautioning that its position in the conflict is deteriorating.
In a significant development, Putin admitted on Sunday to a “certain deficit” of fuel in Russia and pledged to enhance security measures at oil installations while increasing fuel production.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has escalated its drone attacks on Russian military and energy facilities, resulting in a major oil refinery in the south catching fire. The objective is to diminish Moscow’s revenue from the ongoing invasion and make Russians feel the impact.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that their targeted strikes on two Russian oil refineries are diminishing the resources fueling the Russian war effort and advancing towards peace.
