Fresh heat health alerts have been issued for three regions in the UK over the next 52 hours, with the Government cautioning about a “greater risk to life” for vulnerable individuals. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced that yellow alerts will be in effect for the East of England, London, and the South East from Thursday, May 28 at 4 pm until Saturday, May 30 at 8 pm. This alert signifies potential impacts on health and social care services, an increased risk to life, and higher healthcare service utilization by vulnerable groups. The UKHSA highlighted that indoor spaces are at a higher risk of becoming excessively warm during this period.

Additionally, the agency has raised concerns about a potential rise in water-related incidents, including risks associated with cold-water shock and drowning. This follows a recent series of amber alerts that were previously active last week for the Midlands, Eastern England, and South Eastern England.

Originally set to expire on May 28 at 5 pm, the amber alerts were lifted earlier that morning. The UKHSA expressed surprise at having to issue these warnings so early in the year. On Tuesday, the UK experienced a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures reaching 35°C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens for the second consecutive day, according to the Met Office.

The Met Office forecasts that some warmth will persist, especially in the southeast, with temperatures possibly reaching 32°C on Thursday before gradually decreasing to around 28°C on Friday as the influence of high pressure diminishes.
