A mother has been convicted of killing her young son by administering a lethal combination of prescribed drugs before authorities could intervene in the child’s care situation. Emma Barnett, residing in Debden, Essex, had evaded detection in her house after a court ruling on November 8, 2024, that decided her 14-month-old son Oakley should be taken away.
During the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Mr. Justice Derek Sweeting revealed that the 36-year-old drove her car to Epping Forest and then returned home on foot. Essex Police disclosed that Barnett and Oakley were reported missing initially, with suspicions that Barnett had taken her son to Epping Forest. However, law enforcement eventually entered her residence and discovered them in the attic.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), evidence displayed in court indicated that Barnett had concocted a mixture of milk and medication in a bottle, which she fed to Oakley, resulting in his demise. Following the trial, Barnett was found guilty of murder.
During interactions with officers, Barnett first claimed Oakley was asleep, but later confessed to having caused his death. The court heard that Barnett attempted suicide in front of the police and ingested an overdose of paracetamol.
The judge mentioned that Oakley was admitted to a hospital and passed away on New Year’s Eve in 2024. The prosecution asserted that Barnett knowingly administered prescription drugs to Oakley with the intent to kill him.
Barnett argued that Oakley’s death was accidental, stating that her intention was to end her own life only after her son was taken away from her. Investigators discovered two baby bottles in the loft containing substances testing positive for sedative antihistamine promethazine and antidepressant mirtazapine.
Senior Crown prosecutor Nicola Pope emphasized that Barnett intentionally provided her son with a deadly medication concoction. The sentencing for Barnett is scheduled at Cambridge Crown Court on June 5.
Detective Inspector James Holmes of Essex Police expressed condolences for Oakley and all individuals affected by the tragic incident.
