Britons are being advised to prioritize safety during international travel, with over 1,000 cases of travel-related illnesses reported this year. Among the illnesses documented are malaria, dengue fever, and the Zika virus.

Preventative measures such as vaccination, taking malaria prophylaxis, and maintaining good hygiene practices are recommended to reduce the risk of falling ill while abroad. The latest data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) through Travel Health Pro highlights the importance of these precautions.

From January to June 2026, in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (EWNI), the Zika virus, primarily transmitted by mosquitoes in regions like South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia, has resulted in eight reported cases. Indonesia, with four cases, was the most frequently cited country of exposure, a notable increase compared to previous years.

Chikungunya, another mosquito-borne infection characterized by sudden fever and joint pain, saw 59 reported cases, with Sri Lanka being the most common travel destination associated with the infection.

Malaria, a severe mosquito-borne disease, accounted for 557 cases in EWNI between January and May 2026, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Enteric fever, including typhoid and paratyphoid fever, transmitted through contaminated food or water, led to 287 reported cases. Dengue fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, resulted in 137 cases in England, with Southeast Asia and South Asia being the primary regions of exposure.

Dr. Hilary Kirkbride, a consultant epidemiologist and head of travel health at UKHSA, emphasized the necessity of thorough preparation and planning to ensure safe and enjoyable travels. Recommendations include checking the TravelHealthPro website for updated health advice, obtaining necessary vaccinations, taking antimalarial medications, using insect repellent, and practicing food and water hygiene precautions.

Travelers are reminded that even if they have visited a destination previously, they do not have the same immunity as residents, necessitating continued precautions. Special attention should be given to pregnant individuals or those trying to conceive, who should consult with healthcare professionals before traveling.
