The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School this week held a mix of emotions for Chris Norbury, a local resident with a personal connection to the school. Norbury, whose wife was present during the tragic mass shooting in February, joined other community members to witness the beginning of the building’s teardown.

Reflecting on the impact of the events, Norbury emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs and feelings of those directly affected. He sees the demolition as a significant step towards the community’s healing and the next phase for Tumbler Ridge and its students.

The school, established in the 1980s during Tumbler Ridge’s coal mining era, has been a cornerstone for generations of students, fostering cherished memories over the past four decades. However, following the tragic incident earlier this year, students and faculty expressed their reluctance to return to the premises and advocated for the building’s removal to aid in the healing process.

Looking forward, plans are underway for a new school facility, with temporary accommodations being expanded for the upcoming academic year. The focus remains on providing a secure and conducive learning environment for students and staff, offering both in-person and distance learning options to support individual needs.

As the school site transitions into a grass field, discussions on permanent memorials and the future use of the property are ongoing. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the importance of honoring the wishes of the victims’ families in shaping these decisions, emphasizing community engagement and support in the recovery process.

The community is working on a comprehensive recovery plan with continued assistance from provincial and federal resources. Feedback from students, families, and residents is integral to ensure the community’s evolving needs are met effectively.

Amidst these developments, hopes are high for a new school that will not only serve as a symbol of progress but also provide modern facilities and specialized programs to enrich the educational experience for future generations. Norbury expressed optimism for the future, eagerly anticipating the dawn of a new chapter for Tumbler Ridge’s educational landscape.
