A peculiar natural wonder, the narwhal tusk, can reach lengths of up to three meters. This tusk, an upper tooth that emerges through the whale’s lip on the left side, is distinct for its perfectly straight growth without any curves.
Researchers from across the globe have uncovered the mystery behind the tusk’s straight growth, attributing it to a distinctive pattern of opposing spirals. The revelation that the tusk features two opposing spirals, one turning to the right and the other to the left, came as a surprise to the team led by Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University, Denmark.
In a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications, the research delves into the science behind how these opposing spirals enable the tusk to grow in a straight line. The investigation began when Birkedal collaborated with a colleague in organic chemistry who was intrigued by the handedness of molecules. Inspired by reports of the uniform leftward spiraling of narwhal tusks in Greenland, Birkedal embarked on the research.
By teaming up with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s group dissected the molecular structure of the tusks and spirals. Advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans revealed the presence of two opposing spirals—a left-handed spiral on the cementum outer layer and a right-handed spiral in the dentine inner layer.
This breakthrough not only demystifies the straight growth of narwhal tusks, primarily found in male narwhals, but also holds promise in unraveling the structural principles of human bones and similar biological phenomena, according to Birkedal.
Renowned narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia from Harvard University commended the in-depth analysis of what he hails as the “most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” Nweeia’s research suggests that the tusk primarily serves as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding purposes.
Looking ahead, Nweeia advocates for future studies on narwhals to involve off-season research and collaboration with Indigenous communities, emphasizing the significance of incorporating traditional knowledge from the Inuit. By combining scientific inquiry with traditional wisdom, researchers can gain a comprehensive understanding of these enigmatic creatures.
