Madeline Buss from Vancouver recounts her experience of signing a lease for her first apartment far away from her mother while her mother was unexpectedly transferred to the ICU on the same day. Despite feeling guilty about not being by her mother’s side, Madeline reflects on their unconventional but loving relationship characterized by her mother’s various health challenges. The news of her mother needing a heart transplant left Madeline in shock as she signed the lease papers and struggled to comprehend the situation.

Growing up, Madeline was often referred to as an “Old Soul” due to her mature demeanor, shaped by her role as a caregiver for her mother during challenging times, especially when her mother’s health deteriorated before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite her fears of leaving her mother behind, her stepfather’s reassurance that it was okay for her to prioritize her own aspirations allowed her to move across the country for university, breaking free from the constant fear of her mother’s health struggles.

Madeline acknowledges the importance of caring for loved ones but realizes that receiving care and support from others is just as vital. Despite the distance, her relationship with her mother remains strong, albeit now maintained through phone conversations. Madeline’s stepfather has stepped in to support her mother, easing the responsibilities that once burdened Madeline. While the guilt of not being physically present during her mother’s health crisis lingers, Madeline finds solace in gradually embracing her role as an active participant in her own life, transitioning from a passive observer.

Following her mother’s surgery and recovery, Madeline finds herself adjusting to the new normal, finding moments of joy amidst the lingering guilt of not being by her mother’s side constantly. The journey has taught her the importance of self-care and accepting support from others, underscoring the circular nature of caregiving and the reciprocal love shared among family members.
