Donald Trump expressed affection for Brazil’s President during an unusual 40-minute phone call before their upcoming crucial meeting. The Republican leader reportedly concluded the conversation with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by declaring his admiration for the politician’s career, mentioning his research on the 80-year-old Brazilian’s life. The two are scheduled to discuss topics such as crime, tariffs, and economic issues during their White House meeting.

The relationship between the two leaders has been strained since the beginning of Trump’s second term, marked by the imposition of a 40% tariff on Brazilian goods by the US. Trump also stirred controversy by advocating for dropping criminal charges against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump took a charm offensive approach, engaging in a lengthy phone call with President Lula. During their conversation, President Lula emphasized the importance of resolving international conflicts and UN-related matters.

Reports from Brazilian publication GloboNews indicated that Trump concluded the call informally by expressing his love for his fellow politician. The previous year, Trump justified tariff increases on Brazil citing the Bolsonaro situation among other factors. The leaders previously met at the United Nations General Assembly where they shared positive sentiments.

Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan expressed optimism about the upcoming conversation with Trump, highlighting a constructive engagement approach. Key topics on the Brazilian agenda include big tech, rare earths, and critical minerals. Trump’s decision to impose levies was linked to concerns over Brazil’s actions against free elections and speech rights.

The meeting coincides with heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Trump warning of potential escalation if a deal is not reached. This warning followed a pause in a bid to release ships stranded by an Iranian blockade. The Navy section of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps assured safe passage through the strait, countering Trump’s threats. The US Secretary of State declared the offensive phase of the Iran situation as concluded.
