Millions of voters are set to head to the polls this Thursday, with numerous council seats in England and the national Parliaments in Wales and Scotland up for contention.

In England, a total of 5,013 councillors will be elected across 134 councils, including 32 London boroughs, six county councils, and six unitary authorities such as the recently formed East Surrey and West Surrey.

The upcoming elections will see Labour defending 2,557 seats, the Conservatives 1,362, and the Liberal Democrats 684, with other parties, including independents, holding the remaining 410 seats.

Political analysts anticipate significant losses for Labour despite Keir Starmer’s call for a focus on progress over divisive politics. The Conservative Party is also expected to face challenges, while Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, is predicted to make substantial gains in the elections.

Polling stations will be open from 7 am to 10 pm, with results anticipated to be announced in the early hours of Friday morning. Voters are advised to bring valid photo identification.

While some councils will witness contests for all seats, others will elect councillors in rotation. Additionally, various district councils will have half of their seats up for election, while many will see a third of positions available.

In Wales, the Labour-controlled Senedd will see an increase in the number of members elected to 96 from the current 60. Each of the 16 Welsh constituencies will elect six members. Meanwhile, the Scottish Parliament election will have voters in Scotland selecting 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs).

Anas Sarwar of Scottish Labour made headlines in February by urging Keir Starmer to step down. In a message to voters before the crucial election on Thursday, he emphasized the choice between unity and division, progress and anger-driven politics.

Election expert Robert Hayward recently projected that Labour could lose approximately 1,800 seats, the Conservatives around 600, Reform UK potentially gaining 1,500, and the Greens poised to secure about 500 seats.
