Flashbacks to the Covid pandemic emerge as Arrowe Park Hospital, previously used for quarantining evacuees from Wuhan, prepares to host British passengers affected by a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship. The hospital initially accommodated British citizens arriving from Wuhan in January 2020 for a 14-day quarantine period. While no symptomatic passengers are currently on board the MV Hondius cruise ship, the World Health Organisation reported six confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the vessel, with four patients hospitalized and three fatalities.

Rescue operations, involving UK government personnel, are underway to evacuate 147 individuals, including 22 Britons, from the infected cruise ship. This evacuation must be completed within 24 hours upon reaching Tenerife to avoid potential delays due to adverse weather conditions. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed cases of hantavirus among British nationals, with two confirmed cases and one suspected case.

Despite concerns, health authorities in the UK assure the public of a low risk associated with the current situation. Arrowe Park Hospital’s role during the early stages of the Covid pandemic garnered attention, earning it the nickname ‘Camp Corona.’ Challenges faced during the quarantine period included diverse guest demographics and the need for extensive health education.

As the hantavirus outbreak unfolds, stringent measures are being implemented for the safe disembarkation of passengers from the MV Hondius in Tenerife. Those testing negative for hantavirus and exhibiting no symptoms will be repatriated via a chartered flight equipped with medical gear. Following their return to the UK, passengers will undergo clinical assessments at Arrowe Park’s designated accommodation block away from public areas.

The Ministry of Defence has deployed a specialized Army team to Tristan da Cunha, a British overseas territory, to provide medical aid to a suspected hantavirus case. This humanitarian effort marks the first instance of medical personnel being air-dropped for support. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasizes the UK’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all British nationals affected by the ongoing health crisis.
