A popular homeware retailer is preparing to shut down one of its London stores alongside 22 others across the UK. Topps Tiles is offering discounted prices at its Cheam location before its closure on August 7 as part of a cost-cutting initiative involving multiple store closures.

Residents have noticed clearance signs appearing at the well-liked store, which has been commended for its excellent service. This closure is part of a broader plan to shut down a total of 23 stores this year, following an earlier announcement that included the closure of 15 stores in addition to the previously planned eight closures, equating to 7% of the retailer’s total stores.

Topps Tiles CEO, Alex Jensen, explained that these closures aim to support future growth and financial stability beyond 2027. The decision comes amidst economic challenges and rising costs, prompting the company to implement strategic measures to improve performance in the second half of the year.

The retailer has not disclosed the specific locations set for closure but emphasized that these actions are vital in reducing costs as part of a significant operational improvement plan. Headquartered in Enderby, Leicestershire, the company reported a slight decrease in sales in the first half of the year due to competition challenges following the acquisition of CTD Tiles.

In recent years, various major retailers have downsized their presence on high streets, with some like WHSmith focusing more on travel locations than traditional retail spaces. Similarly, major banks such as Santander and Lloyds have shifted towards online banking, leading to the closure of physical branches in response to changing consumer behavior.
