More than 1,600 individuals have been impacted by a food poisoning incident associated with Taco Bell. Health authorities in the United States are advising residents in five states to refrain from consuming shredded iceberg lettuce following an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water.
A total of 1,645 cases related to Taco Bell outlets have been identified across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, leading to 94 hospitalizations. The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a cautionary statement, urging individuals to avoid consuming food items containing shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in the aforementioned states.
Cyclosporiasis can result in severe gastrointestinal complications such as nausea and diarrhea, with symptoms sometimes manifesting up to two weeks later. While Taco Bell is connected to 1,645 cases, the broader outbreak has affected nearly 7,000 people nationwide, as reported by NBC News.
Taco Bell has proactively removed lettuce supplied by a vendor in the impacted states, although the supplier remains unnamed. The company stated that, in consultation with public health officials, it has promptly taken steps to remove potentially affected lettuce from the supply chain in select states. The affected ingredient will be permanently excluded from the nationwide supply chain and replaced within 24 hours in specific states.
Although the exact states where lettuce removal will occur were not disclosed, Michigan has reported the highest number of illnesses, with over 3,300 cases since the outbreak’s identification in May. Common symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, sudden weight loss, and loss of appetite, according to health officials.
Experts note the difficulty in tracing the parasite responsible, especially with reduced resources in federal health agencies. Steven Manderach, from the Association of Food and Drug Officials, likened the challenge to finding a microscopic fragment of a needle in a haystack rather than a needle itself.
