Summer is in full swing in the UK, bringing delightful weather in recent weeks. With more sunshine expected, now is a perfect time to plan a trip to the seaside.

The UK boasts numerous stunning coastal destinations, and despite the enjoyable heatwaves, we are all aware of the unpredictable weather here. However, there is a particular spot that I have been visiting since childhood. It gets lively during the summer without being overcrowded, and even in bad weather, it remains amazing.

Located about an hour’s drive from Glasgow on Scotland’s west coast, Largs is a charming seaside town. It is renowned for its Viking museum, traditional amusement arcades, and ferry services to the Isle of Cumbrae, making it a popular destination for Scots during the warmer months.

Situated on the Firth of Clyde, this picturesque town offers everything you could desire for a coastal escape, with various accommodation options. We stayed at the Old Rectory, a lovely holiday home for up to 14 guests, featuring a hot tub and ample space for relaxation. One of the highlights of Largs is its proximity to the waterfront from any location.

The delightful Victorian seafront is brimming with attractions, including a wide array of eateries serving anything from classic fish and chips to delectable Thai dishes. Largs holds significant historical importance as the site of a pivotal battle in 1263 that marked the end of Norse dominance in Scotland.

The Vikingar museum provides a fascinating insight into this heritage, while the annual Largs Viking Festival in August offers a hands-on experience with dramatic battle re-enactments and live performances. The town is also famous for Nardini’s, an iconic art deco ice cream parlor known for its exceptional ice cream and waterfront location.

Exploring the town center reveals charming narrow streets lined with independent shops, cafes, and more ice cream parlors. Perk, a bustling café with plant-filled interiors and an impressive menu, is a great spot for brunch.

Largs offers a diverse market scene with vendors selling unique items ranging from organic dog food to handmade jewelry and tarot readings. A quick ferry ride from Largs takes you to the Isle of Cumbrae, where you can cycle around the island and enjoy a pint in the town of Millport.

With family-friendly attractions like playgrounds and waterfalls nearby, Largs provides ample entertainment for day trips or weekend getaways. Whether it’s a sunny day or a rainy one, Largs offers a refreshing seaside experience with its charming attractions and welcoming atmosphere.
