More than twelve individuals were taken into custody by law enforcement in Buenos Aires following disturbances that erupted after Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final.
A large crowd gathered in the streets of the Argentinian capital to witness the final match, eager to see Lionel Messi and the team secure another World Cup victory. Unfortunately, their hopes were dashed as Spain emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, thanks to a goal by Ferran Torres in extra time after Enzo Fernandez was sent off.
Post-match tensions escalated into chaos, with altercations breaking out among the players. After the game, Argentina’s Leandro Parades was red-carded for physical altercations with Eric Garcia of Spain.
Initially, the atmosphere in Buenos Aires, a city of three million inhabitants, was peaceful until disturbances erupted between law enforcement and fans around 11:45 pm, according to reports from Argentine newspaper Infobae. Clashes occurred near the Obelisk, a national monument, where fans attempted to breach protective fencing.
For about 20 minutes, disorder reigned as a large group of fans began hurling glass bottles and other objects at police officers. Law enforcement responded by deploying tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the agitated crowds nearby.
At least fifteen individuals have been arrested by authorities, with several sustaining injuries during the unrest. The extent of the injuries is currently unknown.

Following the World Cup victory, Argentinians enjoyed a bank holiday, which coincided with the players’ return to Buenos Aires for a celebratory parade centered around the Obelisk.
