More than half of households experience disagreements over where to store various food items, such as eggs, ketchup, and bread. A recent survey revealed that over 75% of individuals are uncertain about the optimal storage locations for certain foods, often relying on traditional practices or seeking online guidance.
The survey conducted by Bahlsen, a biscuit manufacturer, highlighted common confusion surrounding the storage of bananas, potatoes, avocados, bread, jam, and honey among Brits. Food waste expert Kate Hall emphasized the importance of proper food storage, particularly in hot weather conditions, as factors like temperature, humidity, and light exposure can impact food quality.
Hall recommended refrigerating items like apples to prolong freshness and crispness, and storing opened jams and marmalade in the fridge to prevent mold growth. While some condiments are acidic or sugary, refrigeration can help preserve their flavor and quality. Eggs can be kept at room temperature in the UK but should be refrigerated if the temperature exceeds 20°C.
Certain foods like tomatoes, chocolate biscuits, olive oil, honey, and coffee should not be stored in the fridge to maintain their taste and texture. Bananas are best stored at room temperature to ripen naturally, according to Hall’s advice.
Understanding the ideal storage locations for different foods can help enhance their longevity and quality, preventing unnecessary waste and ensuring a better culinary experience.
