Keir Starmer has responded to Tony Blair’s recent criticism of the government, while Andy Burnham has labeled the former Prime Minister’s views as outdated.

Starmer defended his leadership against Blair’s accusation of lacking a cohesive plan. Burnham, vying for a return to Westminster after an upcoming by-election, stated that the Blair era failed to steer the country away from Margaret Thatcher’s harmful policies.

Blair’s controversial remarks, amid Labour’s challenging campaign leading to the June 18 vote, called for the abandonment of net zero targets and a review of the triple lock pension protection. He also criticized the Prime Minister’s handling of Donald Trump.

Starmer expressed disagreement with Blair’s assessment of the government’s actions, highlighting the positive changes made since taking office two years ago. He emphasized economic stabilization, growth, and improvements in various sectors, including the NHS.

Blair’s intervention has caused concern within Labour circles, with Burnham pointing out the absence of addressing the top voter concern of declining living standards in Blair’s lengthy essay.

Burnham, in an article for The Times, criticized Blair’s advocacy for more deregulation, labeling it as regressive. He emphasized the need to rectify past mistakes and highlighted the failure to reverse Thatcher’s policies during the Blair years, particularly in housing.

Referring to his success in reducing bus fares as Greater Manchester Mayor, Burnham advocated for greater devolution of powers to local authorities for better community service. He stressed the need for a shift in focus towards practical education pathways for youth to address welfare system challenges.

Blair’s focus on the lack of a coherent national plan and the need for political repositioning to secure a second term was met with criticism from Burnham, who emphasized the importance of addressing inequality and implementing substantial reforms to education and welfare systems.
