Lucy Adams, a 38-year-old single parent from Witney, Oxon, encountered intrusive questioning from landlords and agents while searching for a flat. She expressed dismay at the personal and invasive queries about her daughter’s father, which she found distressing and draining. Financial discrimination due to receiving benefits further complicated her housing search, with some landlords demanding six months’ rent upfront and refusing to show her properties.

In a recent report titled ‘Locked Out, Single Parent Discrimination in the UK Rental Sector,’ over 400 parents shared similar experiences of discrimination. A survey of 412 single parents revealed that nearly two-thirds faced discrimination, such as being denied property viewings, charged higher deposits, or rejected solely for being single parents. The research highlighted the high child poverty rates among single parent renters on Universal Credit compared to two-parent families.

Ruth Talbot, the Founder of Single Parent Rights, emphasized the urgent need for legal protections for single parent families in the private rental sector. She highlighted the challenges faced by single parents due to discrimination from landlords and government policies, urging authorities to address these issues promptly.

Nathan Caplan, a disabled single dad from Colchester, shared his struggle to find suitable housing after receiving a ‘no-fault’ eviction notice. Despite his efforts to secure accommodation, landlords often dismissed his applications based on income requirements, pushing him into a precarious financial situation.

Similarly, Shakeel, a freelance creative in Bristol and a single parent, detailed his homelessness ordeal following a separation. Facing mental health challenges and financial constraints, he highlighted the lack of support for single parents in accessing affordable housing.

Another survivor of domestic abuse from Surrey recounted her harrowing experience of being served with an eviction notice while pregnant, emphasizing the housing difficulties faced by single parents in securing stable accommodation. Despite government interventions such as the Renters’ Rights Act, challenges persist due to gaps between rent and housing allowances.

In response to these issues, the government stressed its commitment to renters’ rights and affordable housing initiatives. However, Single Parent Rights advocates for stronger enforcement of existing regulations and increased support for single parents facing housing insecurity.

Lucy, after a four-year wait, finally secured social housing, underscoring the significance of stable and secure homes for single parents and their children.
