British defense officials have criticized the “dangerous” actions of Russian warplane crews, who flew dangerously close to a UK spy aircraft protecting NATO territory from potential threats. The British “Rivet Joint” plane, worth £310 million, was conducting a routine patrol above the Black Sea when it was closely approached by two Russian supersonic fighter jets.

Both the Su-35 and Su-27 jets flew within meters of the British spy plane, causing the autopilot to malfunction and emergency alarms to sound. These Russian aircraft are specifically designed to engage in aerial combat with NATO planes and intercept long-range bombers such as the American B1 and B-52 aircraft.

During another alarming incident, a Russian Su-27 aircraft made six close passes in front of the British plane, coming as near as six meters to the Rivet Joint’s nose. The UK spy plane was unarmed and operating in international airspace over the Black Sea as part of efforts to secure NATO’s Eastern Flank.

The recent encounter occurred last month, prompting complaints from the UK Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Office to the Russian Embassy, condemning the unsafe behavior of the Russian pilots. The Boeing RC-135V/W “Rivet Joint” aircraft carries a crew of approximately 25 to 30 members, including intelligence experts operating onboard surveillance systems.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP strongly condemned the incident, highlighting the risks of accidents and potential escalation due to the Russian pilots’ actions. He praised the professionalism and bravery of the RAF crew for continuing their mission despite the dangerous maneuvers. He emphasized the UK’s unwavering commitment to defending NATO, allies, and interests against Russian aggression.

The incident marked the most dangerous Russian provocation against a UK Rivet Joint since 2022, when a Russian plane fired a missile near the Black Sea. Sources suggest that the Russian actions aim to create tension, test UK responses, and disrupt surveillance efforts in the region.

The RAF Rivet Joint aircraft plays a critical role in reconnaissance and electronic surveillance to safeguard NATO territory. This incident comes amid escalating Russian aggression and increased military activities in Eastern Europe and the High North. Tensions have been further heightened by the conflict in Ukraine, leading to more frequent aerial and maritime incursions by Russian forces near British airspace.

The intercepts occurred shortly after the Defense Secretary disclosed concerning Russian submarine activities near vital underwater infrastructure in the North Atlantic, where British forces were deployed alongside allies.
