The recent interception of the ship Smyrtos by the Royal Marines is seen as the beginning of a series of similar operations that will increase pressure on the Kremlin. This maritime interdiction marks a significant event, potentially being the first time UK armed forces have openly engaged with Russia. The operation sends a clear message to Russia while also representing a direct armed confrontation between the UK and the Kremlin, albeit from a distance. The highly-trained commandos were well-prepared for the mission, although the possibility of a confrontation could not be entirely ruled out.

The operation, which involved RAF surveillance planes, helicopters, two warships, NCA officers, and Royal Marines of 42 Commando, was high-risk. Commandos equipped with night-vision gear and heavy weaponry swiftly approached the target vessel near the sea surface, highlighting the potential for complications.

The Kremlin is unlikely to overlook this incident, and retaliation, possibly through a “grey-zone” cyberattack, is anticipated. Despite being below the threshold for war, the ongoing conflict with Russia is evident through various hostile actions, including assassinations on UK soil and cyber intrusions.

Reports suggest that around 500 Russian vessels, known as the “shadow fleet,” are dedicated to evading sanctions imposed on Moscow’s international trade. These vessels play a crucial role in funding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s activities, including the war in Ukraine, by smuggling contraband oil worldwide.

Intelligence sources estimate that this shadow fleet contributes significantly to Russian trade, potentially funding a large portion of the Ukraine invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long advocated for such operations and views them as essential steps in countering the Kremlin’s aggression.

The timing of this operation coincides with the political upheaval following the resignations of key defense officials in the UK. The involvement of NCA, along with prior intelligence, indicates a well-planned operation that aligns with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s authorization for such actions.

Zelensky’s endorsement of the operation underscores the urgency of addressing the influx of shadow fleet vessels passing through UK waters. Tensions between the UK and Russia are escalating, prompting a need for vigilance against further provocations from the Kremlin.
