Nigel Farage has been urged by a government minister to redirect his focus away from spreading divisive rhetoric. The call came after the Reform UK leader released an extensive essay alleging a two-tier state in Britain that discriminates against white individuals.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed her support for Andy Burnham in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, highlighting Burnham’s ability to address significant societal issues. Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, is poised to challenge Keir Starmer if re-elected as an MP.
Speaking on Mr. Farage’s essay, Nandy criticized his divisive language and encouraged him to channel his energy elsewhere. She emphasized the importance of addressing real challenges faced by the country, such as stagnant living standards and the need for improvement.
In his 5,000-word essay published on his Substack newsletter, Farage criticized what he described as an entrenched anti-White racism within the British government. He particularly denounced diversity initiatives, labeling them as a “toxic ideology.”
Reform UK’s education, skills, and equality spokeswoman, Suella Braverman, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that white people face unfair treatment compared to non-white individuals. Braverman advocated for the scrapping of the Equality Act, citing concerns about preferential treatment based on race.
Opposition to Reform’s plans came from Labour chair Anna Turley, who raised alarm over potential rollbacks of women’s rights under the proposed changes. Turley emphasized the importance of safeguarding women’s rights and criticized Farage’s stance on gender equality.
Meanwhile, Andy Burnham’s leadership ambitions within the Labour Party have been openly discussed, with former health secretary Wes Streeting also expressing interest in any future leadership contests. The Makerfield by-election is seen as a crucial event that could shape the trajectory of UK politics.
In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Burnham warned about the risk of divisive politics similar to the United States if Reform gains traction. He highlighted the growing polarization in UK politics and stressed the importance of unity and collaboration within communities to avoid a toxic political environment.
