A courageous nurse, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, acted swiftly to save a patient’s life at Sunderland Royal Hospital when a fire broke out after the patient attempted to use an e-cigarette while connected to an oxygen supply. The nurse successfully extinguished the fire, preventing a potentially tragic situation. Despite sustaining burns to her head, the patient, a woman in her 50s, received timely medical attention and avoided serious harm, thanks to Emmanuel’s decisive actions.

Emmanuel’s bravery during the incident earned him a national award for his quick thinking and courage in protecting the ward from further harm. Images from the scene depicted the intensity of the fire that had melted the oxygen mask and tube, causing damage to the patient’s bed and the room’s floor.

Reflecting on the event, Emmanuel described feeling terrified initially but emphasized the importance of teamwork in handling the crisis. He expressed gratitude for the recognition received, which motivates him to continue providing exceptional care to patients and colleagues daily.

The hospital’s director of nursing, midwifery, and allied health professionals, Karen Sheard, praised Emmanuel for exemplifying the values of compassion, respect, teamwork, and honesty in action. She emphasized the importance of healthcare professionals like Emmanuel who embody excellence and inspire others in the field.

Following the incident, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust issued a cautionary reminder about the risks associated with smoking and vaping in hospital settings. The hospital’s fire safety and security manager, Jim Charlton, highlighted the need for patients and visitors to refrain from vaping indoors to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the hospital environment.

The exemplary response of the ward staff in handling the fire was commended, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Cavell Star Award, which recognizes exceptional dedication and care within the NHS, underscores the vital role of individuals like Emmanuel in upholding high standards of patient care and safety.
