A group of hospital workers in the Netherlands will enter quarantine as they neglected to follow strict safety procedures while treating a patient from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship, the MV Hondius. Radboud University Medical Centre (Radboudumc) in the Netherlands disclosed that 12 staff members were potentially exposed to contamination when they did not adhere to specific protocols when handling the blood and urine of an infected individual aboard the virus-stricken vessel.

Although the risk of infection is deemed low, the 12 healthcare workers will undergo a six-week preventive quarantine as a precautionary measure, according to the hospital. The patient, diagnosed with the rat-borne virus, has been hospitalized since last Wednesday following evacuation from the troubled Dutch ship, which has been at the center of a global health crisis. Standard safety precautions were initially taken when drawing blood from the patient, but it was later revealed that a more stringent procedure should have been followed due to the nature of the virus. Additionally, it was discovered that the most recent international guidelines were not followed during the disposal of the patient’s urine.

The medical center assured that the isolated staff members will receive necessary support, and Dr. Bertine Lahuis, the board chair of Radboudumc, emphasized that the overall risk to the general population remains minimal. She expressed regret over the incident and highlighted the importance of learning from the situation to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The patient at Radboudumc was one of three individuals evacuated from the MV Hondius, with another patient admitted to Leiden University Medical Centre and a third person taken to a hospital in Germany, testing negative for the hantavirus.

Tragically, three individuals succumbed to the hantavirus during the recent outbreak on the Dutch vessel, including two from the Netherlands and one from Germany. The remaining passengers were finally able to disembark from the ship on Monday after enduring weeks of uncertainty.
